Imprisoned “People’s Lawyer” Lynne Stewart Fights for Her Life
Imprisoned attorney Lynne Stewart has been denied a compassionate release request even though her cancer has recurred. Her supporters say her on-going incarceration is a death sentence. Even though the prison warden where Stewart is being held was apparently in favor of her release, the Federal Bureau of Prisons stepped in to deny her request, claiming that her health was improving. Lynne Stewart is well known for representing controversial clients, and according to one press account, she “defended America’s poor, underprivileged, unwanted, and forgotten”(Indymedia). Lynne Stewart is serving a ten year jail sentence for the supposed crime of making public a press release in 2003 by a terrorism suspect who was her client.
GUEST: Ralph Poynter, Lynne Stewart’s husband, also a founding member of the United Federation of Teachers
