Dissecting the Immigration Reform Bill
After years of failed attempts, an immigration reform bill is finally close to passing. But, for immigrant rights advocates, does the bill’s heavy border militarization outweigh the path to citizenship offered for undocumented immigrants? Adding to their concerns is the amount of conservative support the bill is getting. Notwithstanding House Speaker John Boehner’s opposition, the proposal has the support of most Senate Republicans, and now a conservative group has launched TV ads in support of it. To top it all off, former President George W Bush gave a rare interview on Sunday backing the bill and saying “It’s very important to fix a broken system.” The bill has passed the Senate and awaits a House vote.
