When the Supreme Court issued its rulings on two important same-sex marriage cases, headlines screamed that the court had “struck down” the Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA, and “dismissed” California’s Proposition 8.

But was it really that simple?

UCLA Law Professor Adam Winkler, who this week is helping us make sense of the Supreme Court’s decisions, explains that “the Court’s rulings focused largely on process – either how the law was passed or how the law came up for review in the Court.”
