House Republicans Target Food Stamps
Food stamp recipients, trying to live on just over $30 of food a week, have a new reason to worry – House Republicans want to cut the food stamp program either dramatically or altogether.
A vote yesterday split off, for the first time in decades, the federal government’s food stamp program from the Farm Bill to which it is traditionally attached.
An earlier version of the bill, with $20 billion in cuts failed to pass the House a month but a similar bill with smaller cuts passed the Senate.
President Obama has already promised to veto a Farm bill that arrives on his desk sans Food Stamps.
The House GOP leadership has promised to vote on a separate Food Stamp bill at a later date.
