Judge Allows Charge of “Aiding the Enemy” in Bradley Manning Trial
One of the most important whistle blowers of our time may be facing a lifetime in prison. Bradley Manning, who’s defense team attempted to have the most serious charges against him dropped, will in fact be charged with the loaded and yet vague crime of “aiding the enemy.”
A military judge issued the ruling yesterday on the basis of the fact that by sharing classified government documents with the media, Manning enabled terrorist groups like Al Qaeda to obtain information publicly, even though the 25 year old Army Private never contacted any such groups.
While the charge means that Manning could face life in prison, the decision also has serious implications for journalists who try to protect their sources.
The judge presiding over Bradley Manning’s trial could issue a verdict on the array of charges he faces as early as next week.
