More Indiscriminate Surveillance Revealed: ACLU Reports Cops Tracking Millions of Cars
These days it really does feel as though we’re living in Orwell’s 1984. As if the government wasn’t gathering enough data on your online and telephone activity, a new report by the ACLU has revealed that police departments across the nation are keeping track of where you drive too.
Cameras installed around cities like Los Angeles are taking photos of vehicles on the roads, and using advanced digital technology to log the information automatically.
The ACLU, which has filed lawsuits over the practice, discovered it after analyzing reams of data from city police departments obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.
The civil liberties group says “the government is increasingly using new technology to collect information about all of us, all the time, and to store it forever – providing a complete record of our lives for it to access at will.”
