Victor Serge: A Political Biography – Part 3
Victor Serge is a little known Russian Revolutionary whose political activism and prolific writings are being seen in a new light today.
The Bolshevist leader joined Russia’s communist party after the 1917 revolution and went on to join the so-called Left Opposition.
Ever vigilant of the abuse of power, Serge became one of Stalin’s strongest critics, and faced years of jail sentences and publisher boycotts.
But he persisted in speaking out and recording his ideas as an historian and a writer. He spent the last few years of his life in Mexico, where a trove of unpublished works reside.
It was there that KPFK programmer and the author of Serge’s definitive biography met with his family members and accessed much of his work. Suzi Weissman wrote Victor Serge: A Political Biography in 2001.
Now, the book’s second edition is out at a time when interest in Victor Serge’s work is seeing a major resurgence.
Here is part 3 of our 3 part interview.
GUEST: Suzi Weissman, professor of Politics at Saint Mary’s College of California, host of KPFK’s Beneath the Surface heard on Fridays at 5 pm, and author of Victor Serge: A Political Biography
