Uprising’s Friday guest expert Rose Aguilar, op-ed writer for Al Jazeera English and host of Your Call on KALW in San Francisco, analyzes today’s news headlines:

Two high security prisons in Iraq were attacked by armed men this morning, leading to hundreds of prisoners escaping. News media are reporting that among the prisoners were many Al Qaeda militants. Iraq’s security situation has severely deteriorated in the past year. One of the prisons is Abu Ghraib which of course many of us remember as being the site of notorious American torture tactics.

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism released a report this morning based on leaked documents from the Pakistani government which revealed that as many as 400 civilians may have been killed by American unmanned drones over the 9 year campaign. Of the 400 nearly a hundred were children.

House Speaker John Boehner said yesterday that solving the nation’s fiscal problems rather than the immigration system is his top priority, in a strong indication that the President’s priority legislation on immigration may languish in the House. Meanwhile, three young undocumented immigrants returned to Mexico last week to draw attention to the plight of immigrants in the US. Today, in about an hour, they will attempt to cross back legally into the US over the border with Arizona.

And finally, pioneering journalist, known as the Dean of the White House Press corps, Helen Thomas, died on Saturday at the age of 92. She covered every president from John F Kennedy to Barack Obama and broke historic barriers for women journalists.
