Uprising’s Friday guest expert Robert Jensen, a Professor of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, author of many books, his latest being, Arguing for Our Lives: A User’s Guide to Constructive Dialog, analyzes today’s news headlines:

The political standoff in Egypt after Mohammad Morsi’s ouster remains with 6 people being killed this morning during a sit-in. Street battles between Morsi’s supporters and opponents in and around the capital Cairo are escalating as army troops and police join in the fighting.

An American has been detained in China over a widening bribery scandal involving international pharmaceutical companies like GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca. Chinese authorities are claiming that doctors and hospital staff were bribed into prescribing certain drugs to patients and that those actions further drove up the cost of the drugs.

And, in a follow up to a story we reported on yesterday, three young immigrant activists who deported themselves back to Mexico, tried to legally re-enter the US into Nogales, Arizona. Their goal was to take dramatic action to draw attention to the plight of immigrants like themselves. The three activists, Lizbeth Mateo, Marco Saavedra, and Lulu Martinez are apparently being detained by Customs and Border Patrol officials. An attorney has planned to file asylum papers on their behalf if they are denied entry back into the US. One of the three detained, Lizbeth Mateo said “We are giving President Obama a chance to do the right thing. They always say, ‘why don’t you come here legally?’ Well, this is his chance to create the legal process.”
