New climate research predicts that millions of people’s home worldwide will be submerged underwater due to rising sea levels on a warmer planet by the century’s end.

If that scares you so deeply that all you want to do is turn off the radio rather than hear the gory details about the world’s end, you’re not alone.

Interestingly, apocalyptic climate predictions cause vastly different reactions among people depending upon their political tendencies. Liberals view this type of research as further proof of the doom that fossil fuel use is propelling us towards, while conservatives dismiss it as sensationalist.

But denialism about climate change is not just an interesting example of how political differences work – it has real life consequences about the future of the planet.

Nearly half the American population does not believe global warming is real, even if nearly 100% of scientists who study the matter do.

Now, social scientists are examining the disconnect between liberals and conservatives over climate change, saying that its time to move the climate change debate out of the “left-wing ghetto.”
