This is a special national edition of Uprising as we spend today celebrating the Pacifica Radio Archives – that special institution within Pacifica Radio that houses, preserves, and disseminates the voices, stories, and sounds of our history and our social movements.

During this hour we feature some of the most important voices of what is known as Second Wave Feminism – that period from about 1963 to about 1982 when American feminism became so much more than voting rights – it became a struggle for liberation, reproductive freedom, and more.

Earlier this year, the Pacifica Radio Archives received a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission to the tune of $128,000 dollars. It is a matching grant that will help to preserve the voices of American feminism housed in the Pacifica Radio Archives as part of a project called American Women Making History and Culture 1963-1982.

As we raise funds today for the Archives to continue to do their important work we’ll hear the voices of women like Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, Germaine Greer, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem and Rita Mae Brown.
