Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break Between People and Government
Citizen apathy can mean the difference between an unjust status quo, and a better future. The belief that we are unable to change our society for the better paralyzes most of us into accepting that some injustices will never disappear.
Challenging that belief for decades is Sam Daley Harris, long-time activist and organizer, founder of RESULTS, an international citizen lobby group that has taken on such big issues like world hunger, micro-credit, child immunizations, and even climate change.
He is also the founder of the Center for Citizen Empowerment and Transformation, and the author of the inspiring 1993 book Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break Between People and Government, which is just now out in its 20th anniversary edition, updated with a new chapter and a foreword by Nobel peace laureate Mohammad Yunus.
Sharing a highly successful model of how volunteer activists managed to successfully enter the media discourse, and pressure their elected representatives to back reforms to end poverty, Harris offers a model for creating change that may cause discomfort in acknowledging that if change is so attainable, why isn’t every one engaged in it?
GUEST: Sam Daley-Harris, founder of RESULTS, Director of the Center for Citizen Empowerment and Transformation and former Director of the Microcredit Summit Campaign, author of Reclaiming our Democracy
