Armed gunmen lay siege to a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya this weekend, killing at least 62 people. Militants affiliated with Somalia’s Al Shabaab group had held unknown numbers of people hostage since Saturday. So far two hostage takers have reportedly been killed and an evacuation of the remaining hostages is on-going. Among the dead are a number of foreigners including a well known poet from Ghana, Kofi Awooner, and four Britons, two Canadians, and two French. The Kenyan President’s nephew and his fiancé were also killed. Click here for a Guardian article about the story.

President Obama addressed a memorial service yesterday for the victims of last week’s Washington Navyyard shooting, asking “whether as Americans we care in moments of tragedy. Clearly we care. Our hearts are broken again. The question is do we care enough?” He added the shooting should “be a shock to all of us, as a nation and a people…It ought to obsess us. German Chancellor Angela Merkel celebrated a stunning election victory yesterday, when her conservative party coalition won a majority and put her on the way to becoming Europe’s longest running female leader since Britain’s Margaret Thatcher.
