Narcoland: The Mexican Druglords and Their Godfathers – Part 1
A series of murders in 3 Mexican cities have prompted fears over the resurgence of a new turf war in the on-going deadly Mexican drug war. Gunmen killed at least 9 people and injured 6 in the cities of Cuernevaca, Fresnillo, and Monterrey. It is not yet known if the shootings were related.
The death toll of the war has been unimaginable. In just six years, 60,000 people have been killed, among them, many journalists who have dared to cover the links between violent drug cartels, Mexico’s police forces, and the very highest echelons of the government. One of those journalists, who has managed to survive and remains under armed security, is the intrepid Anabel Hernández.
In a 2010 book that distilled 5 years of painstaking and life-risking reporting, Hernández revealed the sordid details of who is fighting the drug war, who benefits, and who pays the price. Now, just released in its first English translation by Verso Books, the book is entitled Narcoland: The Mexican Drug Lords and Their Godfathers. In Narcoland, Hernández names the names of the various drug lords including the notorious El Chapo Guzman, and tells the stories of those government employees and officials who are involved.
In 2012, the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers awarded Anabel Hernández the Golden Pen of Freedom award.
