Miriam Carey, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, was identified late yesterday after the incident. Her 1 year old daughter was found unharmed in the back seat of the car. Carey was under medication for mental illness but no history of violence, and was unarmed. At least one officer and one secret service agent was injured during the incident. Day 4 of the government shutdown and there is still no end in sight. The standoff between both major parties over government funding continues this morning as hundreds of thousands of federal workers remain off the job. Casualties of the shutdown are apparent everywhere from federal investigators for accidents not being available, as well as Labor Department workers being unable to release September’s Jobs report. Meanwhile the deadline to approve raising the debt ceiling is looming on October 17th. Click here to read a Washington Post article about the story.
A new report by the group Environment America has found that the practice of hydraulic fracturing or fracking is creating so much toxic waste water that it would be enough to flood all of Washington DC. Two hundred and eighty billion gallons of toxic waste water were produced by the industry last year alone. The full impact of fracking is as yet unknown because the industry protects much information as trade secrets. Click here to read a Guardian Newspaper article about the story.
