What is the “Patriot Movement”?
On Friday the nation’s third largest airport was shutdown as 23 year old Paul Ciancia shot and killed 39 year old TSA agent Gerardo Hernandez and wounded three others. After Ciancia’s roommate dropped him off at Los Angeles International Airport he pulled out a .23 caliber assault rifle from a duffel bag and started hunting down TSA agents. Ciancia, who was dressed in military fatigues, was eventually shot by airport police and is currently under sedation at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
FBI agents found a one page handwritten manifesto in Ciancia’s duffel bag which stated his beliefs in the anti-government “patriot movement.” The manifesto made reference to a “New World Order” which fears the establishment of a totalitarian world government which would eliminate US Constitutional freedoms such as the right to bear arms. The manifesto also made reference to the Federal Reserve and fiat currency and made disparaging comments about Janet Napolitano, the former head of the Department of Homeland Security.
The Southern Poverty Law Center which has been tracking the Patriot Movement in the US has found a sharp increase in the number of groups since the election of the country’s first African American President, Barack Obama. In 2008 there were 149 Patriot groups but by 2012 the number increased to over 1,300.
