Iranians are celebrating the announcement of a breakthrough agreement with Western nations over its nuclear program. After years of negotiations, representatives from Iran and the so-called P5+1 countries of United States, Britain, China, Russia, France and Germany, signed a 6 month agreement in Geneva early yesterday that would lighten the economic sanctions in place on Iran in exchange for promises to limit the Iranian nuclear program. The deal represents an historic step and has generated a joyful mood in Iran as one newspaper, according to CNN, sported the headline, “This is Iran, and everyone is happy.” Meanwhile, Israel, which was opposed to any deal with Iran, is predictably unhappy about the deal. The Central American republic of Honduras held Presidential elections over the weekend four years after the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya. The conservative incumbent Juan Hernandez is claiming victory, but so is his opponent, Xiomara Castro, Zelaya’s wife, who represents a coalition of leftist parties. Honduras is plagued by corruption and violence and both candidates are promising different approaches to deal with it. A little over half of all votes have been counted so far and it remains to be seen which side will proclaim victory in an election that foreign election monitors have deemed fair. Thai protesters have massed in the hundreds of thousands in Bangkok calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Three years after a bloody standoff between protesters and the government, which led to the PM fleeing into exile, his sister now wants amnesty for those responsible for about 90 deaths. Opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuba has called for a “people’s revolution” against the government. The current Prime Minister is facing a confidence vote in Parliament tomorrow but has said publicly that she has “no intention of resigning or dissolving the parliament.” Click here for an RT.com article about the story.
