The food justice movement in the United States is rapidly growing as more and more people realize how intimately their health is linked to what they eat, and how what they eat in turn is so controlled by corporations that it is imperative to take back control.

Cities all across the nation, and particularly in California, are embracing concepts of urban farming, community gardens, farmers markets, and other green initiatives. But, while we may assume most such efforts are concentrated in the progressive Bay area, it turns out Southern California too is participating in this revolution of sorts.

The City of Pasadena has embraced many green initiatives. A big part of that effort is being led by its health officer and Director of Public Health, Dr. Eric Walsh. He previously served as the Medical Director for the Family Health Division of the Orange County Health Care Agency in Santa Ana, California. Dr. Walsh has served under the current and previous White House Administrations on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Dr. Walsh is the immediate past President of the California Academy of Preventive Medicine. He has won many awards including Congressional Recognition for his leadership and contribution to the health of children. Most recently he was awarded the prestigious 100 Black Men of Orange County Award in Health and Wellness Care.
