Daily News Flash with Courtney Morris on El Salvador’s Elections, New Report on Syria’s Children, and Bernie Sanders’ Presidential Announcement
Uprising’s guest expert Courtney Morris, assistant professor of African American and women’s Studies at Penn State University and a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Rice University, analyzes today’s news headlines:
Preliminary results for El Salvador’s Presidential election are in and the FMLN candidate has declared himself the winner. Salvador Sanchez Ceren, the FMLN nominee, currently leads his rival with a razor thin margin of 0.22%. If he is pronounced the winner, it would be the first time in El Salvador’s history that an actual rebel soldier from the civil war would lead the country. The FMLN was a coalition of rebel groups in the war of 1980 – 1992. One of the main points of contention in this election is the on-going gang violence in El Salvador, leading the country to have one of the highest murder rates in the world. Even though the war in Syria has slipped off the news radar, a newly released report by the group, Save the Children, has found that Syrian children are paying a devastating price. More than a million children have fled to neighboring countries and about ten thousand children have died since the start of the war. A significant fraction of those that died did so because of a lack of medical care. Click here for a New York Times article about the story.
Progressives in the US are cheering at the thought of independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders announcing his intention to run for President. Sanders is the longest serving independent in the history of the US Senate and, in an exclusive interview with John Nichols of The Nation, he announced his desire to lead a “political revolution.” Sanders hasn’t yet decided whether he will run as an independent or try to win the Democratic nomination.
