Daily News Flash with Rahul Mahajan on Ukraine Crisis, CIA Spying on Senators, and Senate’s Bold New ‘Climate Caucus’

Uprising’s guest expert Rahul Mahajan (sitting in for Robert Jensen), a sociologist and news analyst and author of Full Spectrum Dominance: US Power in Iraq and Beyond, analyzes today’s news headlines:

Crisis in the Ukraine continues as the country’s Parliament sends a strong warning to pro-Russian lawmakers in Crimea. The Crimean parliament had passed a resolution saying that it would support a yes vote on a public referendum on whether to join Russia. The Crimean peninsula is an autonomously governed region of the Ukraine currently occupied by thousands of Russian troops. Ukraine’s parliament this morning warned against the referendum to join Russia, saying Crimea faces dissolution if it goes through. The US and EU are meeting today to discuss sanctions on Russia for occupying Crimea. Click here for a Guardian newspaper article about the story.

We turn next to a new development in an on-going spat between the CIA and the Senate Intelligence Committee with Senator Dianne Feinstein announcing angrily this week that the CIA did indeed spy on committee members. The accusation is in relation to the committee’s oversight of the CIA over allegations of post-9-11 detainee torture. Meanwhile, NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden addressed the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas via video chat. In his speech he reiterated the importance of government oversight of the US’s spying programs. Click here for a Washington Post article about the story.

Thirty Senators led by Democratic leader Harry Reid have formed a ‘climate caucus,’ and launched a 15 hour ‘talkathon’ last night to drive home the urgency of action on climate change. The Senators are coordinating their actions with a similar caucus in the House. The lawmakers seem serious, even collaborating with wealthy donors to pledge financial support for candidates supporting climate justice. Click here for a New York Times article about the story.

The core of your writing whilst sounding reasonable in the beginning, did not really sit well with me after some time. Somewhere within the sentences you actually managed to make me a believer unfortunately only for a while. I nevertheless have a problem with your jumps in logic and you would do nicely to help fill in those gaps. If you can accomplish that, I will surely end up being impressed.
