Daily News Flash with Arun Gupta on Harlem Gas Explosion, White House Silence on CIA Investigation, And Mass Protests in Turkey
Uprising’s guest expert Arun Gupta, Independent Journalist and regular contributor to the Guardian, In These Times, The Progressive, and Truthout, and co-founder of the Occupied Wall Street Journal and the Indypendent, analyzes today’s news headlines:
Seven people are dead and 60 injured in an explosion in Harlem, New York. Rescue teams are still searching through the rubble of two collapsed buildings for survivors in East Harlem. The explosion, which took place yesterday, is thought to have been the result of a gas leak. Consolidated Edison, the gas company in charge of inspecting pipes said it had made “high speed” checks of the pipes on February 10th and 28th. Click here for a Reuters article about the story.
The latest in the battle between the Senate Intelligence Committee and the CIA now involves the White House. Sen. Dianne Feinstein this week publicly denounced the CIA for spying on committee members over an on-going years-long investigation of the agency’s role in post 9-11 detainee torture. Today news reports reveal that the White House has for years withheld thousands of pages of classified documents from the committee, and refused to support the committee’s work despite numerous requests. Critics are accusing the Obama Administration of stonewalling the inquiry into Bush-era torture practices. Click here for a McClatchy article about the story.
Finally we go to Turkey where mass protests have mobilized hundreds of thousands on the streets of over a dozen cities. The latest unrest is apparently sparked by the death of a young boy who died after being hit in the head with a teargas canister. According to the New York Times, the boy “has become the newest symbol of simmering anger at [Prime Minister] Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party, known as AKP, and over the tough police repression of political dissent and a recent corruption scandal that has entangled the top echelons of the ruling party.” Click here for a New York Times article about the story.
