Pacifica Radio Archives Preserves Women’s Voices

March is Women’s History Month and there’s nothing like hearing the voices of American women who made history, calling for women’s equality, fighting for reproductive justice and control of their bodies, and for valuing the work that women do. While names like Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, and Bella Abzug may be familiar to us, how often have we actually heard their voices?

If you’re a long time listener to Pacifica Radio, you might have heard them. Doing the hard work of preserving the recorded voices of women’s rights activists heard on Pacifica is the Pacifica Radio Archives which recently was awarded the largest preservation grant in this network’s history for a project called “American Women Making History and Culture: 1963-1982.” The grant, awarded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission Grant launched last year and is being put to use right now.

GUEST: Jolene Beiser, Project Archivist for “American Women Making History and Culture.”
