oil pricesWorried about election year vulnerabilities, the Republican Party has offered Americans $100 rebates to make up for high gas prices. Senator Bill Frist, realizing that the idea wasn’t too sound, admitted, “The issue … doesn’t seem to have the support that had been anticipated.” According to The Washington Post, President Bush “renewed his call for Congress to give him the authority to ‘raise’ mileage standards for all passenger cars.” However, the President has rarely been concerned with Congressional authority in general. Meanwhile, California and nine other states have launched a suit against the Bush administration over environmental rules Tuesday, suing the federal government over SUV gas-mileage standards the state considers too lax.
