Dozens of people have been killed in election-related violence in Afghanistan over the weekend even as there was record turnout. Millions of Afghans showed up to vote in provincial and presidential elections on Sunday despite weeks of violence claimed by the Taliban leading up to it. The Washington Post reports that the vote appears to have broken down along ethnic lines although the final results are still being tallied. It appears that the new government that emerges will have to form a broad coalition in order to stay in power. The two Presidential front runners both have warlords with dark pasts on their tickets. The aftermath of Crimea’s vote to join Russia appears to have had a ripple effect on other ethnic Russian regions of the Ukraine. Three Eastern Ukrainian cities, Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk, last night rose up against the new government in the capital Kiev, which is backed by the US and Europe. Also yesterday reports arose of a Ukrainian military officer in Crimea being fatally shot by a Russian soldier. Those concerned about a flaring up of a new Cold War warn that such an incident could be trigger for a larger conflict between the West and Russia. Here in the US over the weekend immigrant-rights activists around the country marched in a number of cities calling on President Obama to halt deportations. Organizing under the banner of “Not One More Deportation,” immigrants and their allies have dubbed Obama, “Deporter-in-Chief” for deporting more people than any other President in US history, up to 2 million. But House Republicans feel the President is not going far enough. Meanwhile, at a Bush family gathering over the weekend, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush came under fire from his colleagues for saying that sometimes undocumented immigration was “an act of love.” Click here for a Christian Science Monitor article about the story.
