Artist and Activist Favianna Rodriguez Speaks Out on Art and Activism
Favianna Rodriguez’ political activism informs every aspect of her art. Migration, war, patriarchy, gender, sexuality and economic injustice influence her worldview and her brushstrokes. Describing herself as “an artist, agitator, and techie working for social change,” Favianna Rodriguez has achieved international acclaim for her work.
Growing up in the predominantly Chicano town of Fruitvale, California Favianna’s parents are Peruvian immigrants. After spending a few years in Mexico as a teenager, she eventually entered UC Berkeley where she studied art. While it was at Berkeley that she learned print making which helped shape her artistic career, Favianna started winning awards for her art from a very young age.
In 2008 she was named by Utne Reader as one of its “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing The World”. In 2009 she co-founded the political group Presente.org.
