Gay Candidates Passed Over for Episcopal Bishop
GUEST: Rev. Susan Russell, member of the Human Rights Campaign’s Religion Council and President of Integrity USA
Delegates from the Episcopal Diocese of California gathered Saturday to pick their next bishop from a field of seven candidates, three of whom were gay. The diocese chose Reverend Mark Handley Andrus of Birmingham who is a heterosexual. It’s a decision that’s seen as averting inflaming a crisis over homosexuality in the denomination. The broader Episcopal Church has been shaken by a dispute over the inclusion of gays and lesbians that grew increasingly acrimonious after the Church consecrated Gene Robinson, an openly gay man, as bishop of New Hampshire in 2003.
