Snark, Inc.: The Play
GUESTS: Tony Perucci, playwright
Cal State Northridge’s The Performance Ensemble, will perform Snark, Inc. – it’s a play based on Brian Gage‘s satire of consumer culture and is being described as “a unique guerilla theater experience.” The Performance Ensemble has juxtaposed Gage’s book with a range of revolutionary texts including: The Anarchist’s Cookbook, poetry by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Emily XYZ, fiction by Colson Whitehead, and Max Barry. As with the book, the play, Snark, Inc., tells the story of Will, a resident of Snark USA, where everyone works for the world’s most powerful and pervasive corporation, Snark, Inc. The masses slave day-and-night to earn Snark bucks so they may buy up more shiny and delicious Snark – a ubiquitous & seemingly addictive commodity, described as “everything you want it to be.” The Performance Ensemble has adopted an approach of adapting literary texts for the stage through a collaborative approach; emphasizing movement, multi-media technologies, and the experience of live performance. They have adapted such works as George Orwell’s 1984 and James Cain’s Double Indemnity.
