Uprising’s guest expert Robert Jensen, an author and professor of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, analyzes today’s news headlines:

A new study has found that an ice sheet in the Antarctic is melting and that the process is unstoppable. The study, conducted at the University of California in Irvine, in collaboration with NASA, has found, according to CNN, that “Warm ocean currents and geographic peculiarities helped kick off a chain reaction… melting [glaciers] faster than previously realized and ‘pushing them past the point of no return.'” If the entire region melts, it could raise sea levels globally by a total of 4 feet, although that could take centuries. A European Union court has ruled that individuals have the right to have their data be “forgotten” on the internet after a certain time has elapsed. The case was brought by a Spanish man over the former ownership of a home and that he had the right to have his data forgotten. The case was brought under existing European data protection laws. Given the current internet architecture, Google is legally being treated as a “data controller.” The EU judge in the case viewed the ruling as a “clear victory for the protection of the personal data of Europeans.” Click here for a Guardian newspaper article about the story.

An exposé in the Huffington Post has found that food conglomerate, Coca Cola, has been hypocritical in its support of the anti-drunk driving group, MADD. Over the years, the company had donated large amounts of money to Mothers Against Drunk Driving while at the same time being a member of the American Beverage Institute, the leading trade group fighting stringent drunk driving laws. ABI has kept the names of its members a secret but documents obtained by the Huffington Post from the ethic group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), has revealed that Coca Cola has been on the list.
