The US Justice Department has brought the first ever cyber-espionage charges of its kind against China. An anonymous official, speaking to the Associated Press, reported today that Attorney General Eric Holder will announce the indictments against specific Chinese military officials. The Justice Department is asserting that China has broken into commercial servers to steal trade secrets relating to the nuclear, solar, and metals industries. Incidentally, China is one of the NSA or National Security Agency’s biggest targets of surveillance. Click here for an Associated Press article about the story.
In the latest on Nigeria’s internal conflict, some members of Congress have moved to name the militant organization Boko Haram a “Foreign Terrorist Organization”. The discussion came as a meeting in France over the weekend resulted in an announcement that several African nations would take the lead in the hunt for hundreds of girls kidnapped by Boko Haram, with technical and military assistance from Western nations including France, the UK, and the US. A unique series of protests dubbed “Moral Mondays” in North Carolina continue today despite a crackdown by the state legislature to restrict rights of assembly. A government body called North Carolina’s Legislative Services Commission announced a new set of rules curbing political gatherings at the state legislative building. Moral Mondays protests have been building in momentum over the past year – they were prompted by a number of harsh conservative laws being passed by state lawmakers. Nearly a thousand people have reportedly been arrested since last April. Click here for a Think Progress article about the story.
