Dissecting California’s June 3rd Ballot Propositions
Although analysts are predicting record low voter turnout for tomorrow’s California statewide elections, two significant propositions: 41 and 42 will be on the ballot.
Prop 41 addresses the needs of homeless veterans. A YES vote on Prop 41 would authorize $600 million in bonds to provide housing for vets who are currently homeless as well as low income vets. California has the highest number of homeless vets in the nation.
Prop 42 centers around the issue of government transparency. Technically, Californians have access to all public records with local governments being reimbursed by the State for costs to provide documents. In reality, however, the State has not reimbursed these costs due to budgetary shortfalls and local agencies have simply refused to provide requested documents. A YES vote on Prop 42 would shift the financial burden of providing documents squarely on local governments by making it a constitutional mandate.
In addition to the propositions, LA County voters will be choosing a new Sheriff to replace longtime Sheriff Lee Baca. And, Bay Area voters will be deciding on an open Assembly seat which will be crucial to whether public transit workers will be able to strike during times of labor dispute. Plus a number of primary races for Congressional seats and state races such as Governor and Secretary of State will be on the ballot.
