One year after the NSA’s mass surveillance program came to light activists the world over are demanding to “reset the net.” An online privacy advocacy group called Fight for the Future has organized the campaign against mass spying – the same group spearheaded the successful fight against the Stop Online Piracy Act. Big companies like Google and Reddit have signed on, as have organizations like Amnesty International and the ACLU. A series of one-day strikes were held at Walmart branches in various cities yesterday – this time by working mothers. The strikes come at the same time that a new study by Demos on poverty wages among women has found that one simple solution is for employers like Walmart to raise wages for full time work to about $25,000 a year. Some Walmart workers and their advocates plan on confronting Walmart shareholders at an annual meeting in Bentonville, Arkansas tomorrow. Click here for a Guardian newspaper article about the story.

General Motors has released the findings of an internal investigation into its faulty ignition switches. The inquiry was conducted by former US Attorney Anton Valukas and found no evidence of a cover up despite the problems lingering for over a decade before being handled. Faulty ignition switches in some GM cars have been linked to the deaths of at least 13 people. GM CEO Mary Barra has announced that 15 people have been fired and 5 more disciplined.
