In a statement released on May 5th, the University of California announced its plan to implement the Designated Suppliers Program proposed by United Students Against Sweatshops. The program sets fair workplace standards for garment factories. All ten campuses of the UC system will join 18 other already committed universities in implementing it. The decision comes nearly a month after a series of sit-in protests by UC students. On the UC Berkeley campus, 18 anti-sweatshop protestors were arrested during a sit-in in April for trespassing. Ten demonstrators were also arrested at UC Riverside in April.
