Daily News Flash with Robert Jensen on Memo on Drone Killing of US Citizens, Planned Texas Facility for Undocumented Minors, Rich Investors Push MayDay Campaign
Uprising’s guest expert Robert Jensen, author and professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, analyzes today’s news headlines:
A court has ordered the release of an internal government memo legally justifying the extrajudicial killing of Americans through drone strikes. The memo in question was used specifically to justify the assassination of Anwar Al Awlaki, a US citizen, born in New Mexico, and living in Yemen. Al Awlaki was considered an enemy because of his public calls for violent action against the US. According to the 41 page memo the government “[does] not believe that al-Aulaqi’s U.S. citizenship imposes constitutional limitations that would preclude the contemplated lethal action.” Civil liberties groups including the ACLU filed Freedom of Information Act requests to make the memo public. The Associated Press has found that the US is planning on converting a massive warehouse in McAllen, Texas into a facility for unaccompanied undocumented children. The facility will consist of “four fence-enclosed pods inside a corrugated steel warehouse.” More than 50,000 undocumented children mostly from Central American countries have been picked up at the US-Mexico border since last year. The planned facility will be used to process 1000 children at a time. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security yesterday released an open letter urging parents to not send their kids to the US. A new political campaign is making waves and raising dollars. Steve Wozniak, the tech wizard behind Apple, has lent his name to a crowd-funding effort that aims to raise millions of dollars to back independent candidates for election. The Mayday campaign as it’s called, says on its website, “Wealthy funders are holding our democracy hostage. We want to pay the ransom and get it back. We need a team of legislators in Congress who will champion the public policies necessary to fix our broken government, starting by ending the stranglehold of big money on our political system.” Click here for an RT.com article about the story.
