Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson answered questions from the press on Sunday regarding the fate of tens of thousands of undocumented children from mostly Central American countries. He said, “We are looking at ways to create additional options for dealing with the children in particular, consistent with our laws and our values.” But on Monday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest was more direct saying, ” it is unlikely that most of these kids will qualify for humanitarian relief,” Earnest said. “And what that means is, it means that they will not have a legal basis for remaining in this country and will be returned.”

Meanwhile, the Riverside County town of Murrieta continued to express anti-immigrant sentiment, showing up to protest on Friday the 4th of July, against the arrival of migrant children and mothers at a processing facility. Right wing residents in the town have garnered a national news spotlight over their objections to immigrant rights. The protesters waved flags and carried signs reading “illegals go home.”

Pro-immigrant groups have since stepped up their support of the migrant children with a protest held in downtown Los Angeles yesterday afternoon in front of a federal building. About a hundred people gathered from various organizations and even college campuses to draw attention to the reasons why so many children are migrating and the difficult conditions they face both in their home countries and here in the US.
