The state of Utah has decided to petition the Supreme Court over the constitutionality of gay marriage. Two weeks after the tenth circuit court of appeals upheld the striking down of a marriage ban, Utah’s Attorney General has decided to petition the nation’s highest court directly. If the Supreme Court agrees to take it up, it could bring a definitive ruling on the issue of same-sex marriage as early as a year from now. A UC Berkeley law professor explained the significance to the Guardian newspaper, saying, “deciding this for Utah really means deciding this for the whole country.” A year ago the Supreme Court issued two narrow rulings in favor of gay marriage. A new survey of the success of the Affordable Care Act has found that nearly 10 million Americans acquired health insurance coverage since the online insurance exchanges opened last year. A significant proportion of young adults, aged 19-34 got coverage – this is the most sought after group, given that their relative good health makes them more valuable customers for insurance companies. Rates of coverage among Latinos and low-income Americans also rose. And, many more uninsured adults acquired coverage from the government funded Medicaid program. And finally, as part of an overhaul of its telecommunications sector, Mexico’s richest man Carlos Slim, is selling off assets to avoid being hit by regulations. A law passed a year ago is aimed at restricting the dominant power of any one company, and Slim’s company America Movil was just declared to have more than 50% of the telecommunications market share. According to Al Jazeera, America Movil would be required to, “share infrastructure with competitors, [and] adjust rates or eliminate fees for telephone calls inside the country,” unless it reduces its market share.
