Daily News Flash with Maya Rockeymoore on Gaza’s Increasing Death Toll, WCC Divestment from Fossil Fuels, and GOP’s Election-Year Politicking
Uprising’s guest expert Maya Rockeymoore, President of the Center for Global Policy Solutions, a social change non-profit dedicated to making policy work for people and their environment, analyzes today’s news headlines:
On day 4 of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, the number of Palestinians killed has reached 100. There have been many children among those killed by Israeli airstrikes, the latest being a seven year old Palestinian girl in Rafah. Israeli authorities have admitted to targeting 1,100 targets in Gaza since the start of the operation. During that same time, they report 600 rockets being aimed at Israeli targets from Hamas headquarters, 1/3 of which have not landed in Israel, and many others as having been intercepted by a missile defense system. There have been no Israeli casualties reported. More than 30,000 Israeli reservists have been called up in an apparent move toward a ground invasion of Gaza. US President Barack Obama reportedly spoke on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and voiced concern over the escalation in attacks, even offering to help negotiate a ceasefire. The World Council of Churches (WCC) has just decided to divest its holdings from fossil fuel based investments, in a major victory for the climate justice movement. The group is a global one that includes more than 300 churches worldwide and represents about 590 million people. The WCC is to date the largest religious organization to have decided to divest from fossil fuels as part of a growing and organized movement. South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who was instrumental in the fight against Apartheid, earlier this year called for “[an] anti-apartheid style boycott of the fossil fuel industry.” Organizers are hoping the WCC’s move will inspire many other organizations to follow suit. And finally, Republicans are preparing to sue President Obama over his decision to delay the employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act that they themselves vehemently criticized. In the latest attempt to derail Obamacare, the GOP is bizarrely accusing Obama of waiving the mandate without Congressional approval even though it was Republicans who railed against the mandate. And, a judge ruled yesterday that Florida Republicans illegally redrew district lines to benefit their party in 2012. He also accused political consultants of concealing their actions and required the lines be redrawn.
