Daily News Flash with Rahul Mahajan on 22 Palestinians Killed in Fresh Israeli Strikes, Obama’s Business Advisers on Immigration, and Pakistan’s Tahrir Moment
Uprising’s guest expert Rahul Mahajan, a sociologist and news analyst and author of Full Spectrum Dominance: US Power in Iraq and Beyond, analyzes today’s news headlines:
Israeli airstrikes resume in Gaza with the first casualties being a 5 year old Palestinian child and a woman. Israel has begun striking Gaza once more, suspending a set of negotiations that was taking place in Egypt. It accuses Hamas of being the first to break the ceasefire by sending rockets toward Israel. Hamas blames Israel and has sent 140 or so rockets aimed at Tel Aviv. A total of 22 Palestinians have been killed. Meanwhile a proxy war of boycotts continues: a number of US executives have canceled their plans to visit Glasgow, a major city in Scotland that has been flying the Palestinian flag over its city council since the operation on Gaza. And, an Israel ship that was blocked on Saturday from unloading its goods by protesters at the port of Oakland, made a second attempt to unload last night. Despite activists showing up to block it again, longshore workers ended up unloading the ship. President Obama has been meeting with business leaders to get their advice on immigration policy. Representatives of industries like technology and agriculture, who also helped to craft a Senate bill last year, are now advising the President on how they can best take advantage of a vulnerable population of workers. Among their suggestions are excluding the spouses of immigrant tech workers, to maximize the number of visas available. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reported this week that between 5 and 10 Central American children have been murdered in Honduras, after they were deported from the United States, a grim story that lends credence to the claim that children are fleeing horrific violence to come to the US. Pakistan may be on the verge of a revolution as tens of thousands of protesters representing two social movements converge on the capital Islamabad. The liberal political party, Tehreek-e-Insaf, led by cricket star turned politician, Imran Khan, and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek party led by the cleric, Tahirul Qadri, are joining forces to call on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down. They accuse Sharif of corruption, killings, and fraud, and also of condoning US drone attacks in the border regions. The influential Pakistani army has not yet taken a position.
