Will The People’s Climate March Be More Symbolic Than Effective?
With every new scientific study, the news around climate change gets ever more grim. This week, the United Nation’s World Meteorological Organization or WMO issued a report that had even climate scientists aghast by its findings. By collecting air samples from around the globe, the WMO found that the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached record-breaking levels last year. The jump in CO2 was the biggest year to year increase since records started being kept in the 1980s.
The report comes less than two weeks before The People’s Climate March, the largest gathering of protesters demanding governmental action on climate change. The global march will take place on Sunday September 21st the day before a scheduled UN Climate Summit in New York. Organizers expect 200,000 people to attend in Manhattan with over 1,000 different organizations signing on to support the march.
While many environmentalists see the gathering as a way to generate political momentum around climate change, critics point out that the marchers have no specific demands and organizations like The Climate Group with known ties to the fossil fuel industry have been allowed to participate.
Those who see the People’s Climate March as too weak to address the mounting dangers of climate change are calling for a gathering on September 22nd, the day of the UN Summit. They are calling on people to gather in Wall Street wearing blue, in an action called Flood Wall Street.

The march of the Greenzis goose stepping billions of innocent children to the exaggerated greenhouse gas ovens of an exaggerated CO2 crisis so as to defeat those evil fear mongering neocons. Bush admires our Iraq War.
