Commemorating the Nakba
GUESTS: Muhammad Jaradat, Campaign Unit Coordinator, BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights, Fayyad Spaihat, Divestment Support Committee
The word “Nakba,” symbolizes the “Palestinian Catastrophe,†which marks the founding of the state of Israel and the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their land between 1947 and 48. The event is remembered every year on May 15 and this Monday is the 58th anniversary of Nakba. In 1949, David Ben-Gurion, the founder of Israel said, “We must do everything to ensure they [the Palestinians] never do return … The old will die and the young will forget.” But Karma Nabulsi wrote in the Guardian newspaper today that “Each Palestinian refugee family grows up hearing again and again the stories of those final moments in Palestine, the decisions, the panic, as we live in the midst of their terrible consequences.”
