Daily News Flash with Rahul Mahajan New Ferguson Protests, Colorado Student Walkouts, And Endangered Species Report

Three people were arrested this morning in Ferguson, Missouri, during a new series of protests drawing hundreds. The protests were sparked by the burning of a memorial for Michael Brown. The killing of the 18-year old African American man by a white police officer Darren Wilson, continues to ignite outrage over police brutality. For more than a month since Brown’s death, residents and protesters have maintained a makeshift memorial near the site of his death. It is believed that the memorial may have intentionally been destroyed. The press is reporting that some police who arrived at the scene of this morning’s protests were wearing cameras, a tool intended to hold them accountable. Hundreds of students and their teachers walked out of some Colorado schools yesterday in protest of the proposed sanitizing of their AP history text books. The Jefferson County school district board was recently taken over by a conservative majority who intend to, according to the New York Times, cleanse the curriculum, “to promote patriotism, respect for authority and free enterprise and to guard against educational materials that ‘encourage or condone civil disorder.'” Some of the students carried signs saying, “It’s world history, not white history,” referring to the potential erasure of many civil rights struggles from their books. On Friday, the teachers union urged members to call in sick, forcing the shutting down of two schools. Click here for a New York Times article about the story.
A disturbing new report by the Center for Biological Diversity, called ‘Vanishing,’ lists ten rapidly disappearing species from the North American continent. The list includes Mountain Yellow Legged frogs, Monarch butterflies, and the Great White Shark. Some of the species are known to have been around since the age of dinosaurs. The report provocatively suggests our children may never know some of them given how rapidly they are disappearing.
