LAX Hilton Hotel Workers Under Siege
GUESTS: Paulina Gonzalez, Regional Coordinator of UNITE Here
As many of us were showering our mothers with Mothers Day treatment, 75 workers at the LAX Hilton hotel were struggling being indefinitely suspended for a Mother’s Day action. Last Wednesday immigrant workers, mostly mothers, highlighted poor working conditions at their hotel and led a delegation asking hotel management to give the mothers a break. A day later the management retaliated with the suspension. In response UNITE HERE plans to file formal charges with the National Labor Relations Board. Councilmember Janice Hahn, Assemblymember Judy Chu met attempted to mediate with the LAX Hilton management. Meanwhile, a new national study finds extremely high injury rates among hotel housekeepers across the country. Housekeepers are among the lowest- paid of hotel workers and have an injury rate 86% higher than other hotel workers.
There is an on-going picket outside the LAX Hilton Hotel, located at 5711 W. Century Blvd, to protest the suspended workers. There will also be a solidarity protest on Monday May 15th at 5 pm at the same location.
