Reaction from Grant Park, Chicago to Obama’s Win

grant parkThe United States elects its first Black President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Winning 364 electoral votes as of air-time, and the largest share of the popular vote since 1964 when LBJ won. Millions have placed their faith in the Obama presidency and today we’ll examine first reactions, and his economic policies. But first, Senator John McCain gave his concession speech on Tuesday night, in what many say was his most eloquent and gracious speech. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Grant Park, Chicago on Tuesday to celebrate Obama’s win. Pacifica’s Aura Bogado was there, watching the now President Elect Barack Obama’s acceptance speech from just a few yards away. She spoke with dozens of supporters about Obama’s victory and today we’ll hear some of those voices.

Chomsky on Obama: An Exclusive

chomsky on obamaInternationally renowned political analyst, MIT linguist, and commentator, Noam Chomsky said, in advance of the election, that he recommended voting against McCain. This meant of course, voting for Obama – but without illusions. The best-selling author and foreign policy analyst turns 80 on December 7th. He spoke with me yesterday, in an exclusive interview, the first post-election interview to a US media institution, about the election, from a studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The interview was arranged by the Pacifica Radio Archives, as part of its upcoming one-day fundraiser on November 18th, in conjunction with the launch of its campus campaign, bringing Pacifica’s audio history into the classroom. Today we play you the first part of my interview with Noam Chomsky, reflecting on the Obama win – we’ll play the entire interview in a couple of weeks.

Black Perspectives on the Obama Win

obamaWith Barack Obama winning the presidential election, a racial barrier has been broken that many African Americans never thought they would witness in their lifetime. Obama, as the nation’s first black President, more than 200 years after the nation’s founding, garnered close to 100% of the black vote, and greater numbers of African American voters to the polls than ever before. In his Chicago address on Tuesday evening, he referred to 106 year old African American voter, Ann Nixon Cooper. What does Obama’s victory mean for Black Americans, racial politics, and the future of America?

GUESTS: Bill Fletcher, Executive Editor of the Black Commentator and co-founder of Progressives for Obama, Maya Rockymoore, President and CEO, Global Policy Solutions; former Vice President of Research and Programs, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation; Author, The Political Action Handbook: A How to Guide for the Hip-Hop Generation

Is Obamanomics = Socialism?

ObamaPresident Elect Barack Obama is inheriting a financial mess of catastrophic proportions. And millions are counting on him to fix the problem. The day after the election, Obama announced Rahm Emanuel as his Chief of Staff the day after the election – Emanuel is a former director of Freddie Mac. During Obama’s long campaign, he offered detailed proposals for tax relief and enhanced government benefits for the middle and working class, college students and the elderly. He has also proposed investing in infrastructure and “green” technologies, and expanding health insurance to cover all Americans. Passing a $50 billion economic stimulus plans is high on his agenda. Still, with Barack Obama being able to credit a crashing economy for his successful White House run, it remains to be seen what sort of real “change” will he bring to business-as-usual on Wall Street. His rivals painted him as a socialist, even though it’s unlikely they know or care for the definition of the term. Does the fact that he still won with overwhelming support mean Americans are okay with the idea of “spreading the wealth” around? Will he, in fact, be a more socialist president than his predecessors?
