UC Irvine Students Organize for Workers Rights

GUESTS: Fernando Chirino, member of the Worker-Student Alliance, Juan Castillo, Lead Organizer with AFSCME Local 3299

The Student-Worker Alliance of UC Irvine is organizing to improve rights for campus workers. Currently landscapists are outsourced through the company Commercial Landscaping Workers (CLS). Workers who operate the on-campus dining and food facilities are hired through Aramark Corporation. Outsourced workers suffer from poor working conditions. CLS workers receive no sick days, holidays, vacation time, or retirement benefits. Aramark does not provide retirement benefits for its workers and has poor standards for time off. The UCI Student-Worker Alliance is demanding that UCI hire Aramark and CLS workers directly, offer those workers decent wages and benefits, and make a commitment to end all outsourcing on campus.

Sonali’s Subversive Thought for the Day:

Paul Blumberg — “There is hardly a study in the entire literature which fails to demonstrate that satisfaction in work is enhanced or that other generally acknowledged beneficial consequences accrue from a genuine increase in workers’ decision-making power.”
