Last Chance to Save the Farm!
GUEST: Alberto Taltoa, college student and farmer, Rosa Romero, member of the South Central Farmers Support Committee.
Time is running out for the South Central Farmers community garden on 41st and Alameda. Next Monday May 22nd, will mark the end of a thirty day contractual agreement between developer Ralph Horowitz and the Trust for Public Land. The agreement was meant to allow time to raise the necessary funds to purchase the 14 acres of farmland that make up the community garden. However, with only five days left before the agreement ends, advocates of the farm have fallen short of the 16.3 million dollars needed. Once the contract is void, the LA County Sheriffs Department will be able to enforce the farmers eviction on behalf of Horowitz. Activist actions are planned for the entire week including nightly vigils outside Mayor Antonio Villaragoisa’s house, as well as a planned mass demonstration at Los Angeles city hall on Friday morning.
The farm will be open for a farmer’s market on Saturday 11 am – 5 pm, and Sunday 8 am – 5 pm.
There will be a major demonstration of support to Save the Farm from bulldozers this Friday May 19, 2006, 9:00am at Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N. Main Street. Los Angeles.
