Pyongtaek: The Standoff Continues
GUEST: Hwa Young Lee, Chair of the Korea Truth Commission in the US
The South Korean government has been cracking down on activists and farmers in the town of Pyongtaek to make way for a US military installation – it is to be an expansion of nearby US base Camp Humphreys. The government sent military and policemen to the area near Camp Humphreys, to seize control of the Daechuri Primary School that protesters have turned into a makeshift headquarters. Last month, a District Court gave the green light for the ministry’s forceful takeover of the land. On February 7th of this year, Pyongtaek farmers, decided to declare autonomy and renounced their Korean citizenship. They have since been organizing the daily life and the defense of their land and community through general councils, independently of the local government. Korean students and trade unions have been protesting the expansion of the US military base in solidarity with the Pyongtaek farmers.
