Pressure Mounts for LAUSD’s Brewer to Resign
| the entire program
LAUSD Superintendent David Brewer is facing mounting pressure to resign from his position as head of the country’s second largest school district. The African American retired Navy admiral has been on the job for just a couple of years but now faces opposition from members of the school board, as well as LA Mayor Villaraigosa and former mayor Richard Riordan. School board president Monica Garcia announced that this week’s board meeting would include a discussion of Brewer’s job on the agenda. However, Marguerite LaMotte, who is the only other African American member of the board, did not attend the Tuesday meeting, leaving Brewer’s job intact for now. News reports indicate that Brewer may be offered a buyout of the last two years of his $300,000 a year contract, plus about $100,000 for living expenses. The LA Unified School District, which educates about 700,000 of this city’s children, is already strapped for cash.
