Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World

GUEST: David Vine, author of Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World, An associate professor of anthropology at American University in Washington, DC. He has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, and Mother Jones, among other publications.

Takeshi Onaga, the governor of the Japanese Island of Okinawa, has decided to defy Japan’s government, as well as the US, in opposing the building of a new US military base. Mr. Onaga was elected last year on the platform of opposing bases on Okinawa, which has long housed a military staging ground for the US.

Today, the US has dramatically changed the way it conducts its wars, increasingly relying on unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, rather than ground troops. Still, its footprint on the globe as measured by military bases remains strong as ever.

There are currently a whopping 800 US military bases around the world. According to my guest, David Vine, “the United States likely has more bases in foreign lands than any other people, nation, or empire in history.”
