GUEST: Sameera Hafiz, Legislative and Policy Consultant with the group We Belong Together. I spoke with her earlier this week while she was on the march herself.

The US Civil Rights Commission on Thursday of last week released a ground breaking report on so-called family detention centers that hold undocumented immigrants. In its 478-page report, the Commission said that such detention centers were unconstitutional and called on the Department of Homeland Security to immediately release immigrant families being detained. The US Commission on Civil Rights was established nearly 60 years ago as a watchdog group to ensure that the government followed civil rights laws in its treatment of Americans.

Meanwhile, immigrants and their advocates are taking matters into their own hands. The group We Belong Together this month organized a march from Pennsylvania to Washington DC to draw attention to family detention. The pilgrimage, from September 15-23rd ended to coincide with Pope Francis’ address to the US Congress.
