The End of Plenty: The Race to Feed a Growing World

BANNED BROADCAST

GUEST: Joel K. Bourne Jr., an award winning journalist and former senior editor for the Environment at National Geographic. He’s the author of The End of Plenty: The Race to Feed a Crowded World.

The human population of the earth is currently upwards of 7 billion people. By 2040 it’s estimated to reach 9.4 billion, despite declining birthrates in many industrialized countries. While there are many dire implications attached to this number one of the most basic is a question of how our global food system plans to handle feeding this many people.

Decades ago the rising world population was a factor in the so-called Green Revolution, which, through technological advances was expected to result in a system of food production so efficient that it would solve world hunger. But there are still plenty of starving people and the cost of that food production has fed chemical pollution of the planet and climate change.

From the beginning of civilization there have been riots and wars that can be traced back to food shortages. Such scenarios may become more commonplace today as the race to feed a growing population offers few choices.
