Haiti’s Elections Remain Fraught With Problems
GUEST: Brian Concannon Jr., Executive director of the Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti.
Haitians are out en masse protesting their nation’s election results, contending fraud. Thousands gathered on the streets of Port Au Prince for a general strike on Monday. A first round of Presidential elections was held on October 25th, with current President Michel Martelly’s favored candidate Jovenel Moise coming ahead with enough votes to make it to a run-off.
Former President Jean Bertrand Aristide, late in the campaign, threw his Lavalas Party’s backing behind Dr. Maryse Narcisse, but she was edged out by Jude Celestin. Runoff elections are scheduled for December 27th. But with thousands demanding a recount, or even a revote over election fraud allegations, it remains to be seen how it all turns out.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary elections results were also announced late last week and among the winners were Martelly’s party. Haiti has had a history fraught with election fraud, violence, and foreign-backed coups.
